What is a Campaign Service Provider (CSP)?

Last reviewed by Moderation API

A campaign service provider (CSP) is the company a business uses to send its text messages, and the one that registers that business for 10DLC. Messaging platforms, CPaaS providers and many marketing and customer-service tools are CSPs.

What a CSP does

  • Registers each brand (the business) and each campaign (the use case, sample messages and opt-in flow) with The Campaign Registry.
  • Assigns phone numbers to campaigns and sends each campaign's traffic to a direct connect aggregator (DCA).
  • Answers to the DCA and the carriers when a campaign breaks the rules.

Why compliance falls on the CSP

One CSP sends traffic for hundreds or thousands of brands, and it cannot read every message by hand. When a brand's messages drift from the campaign it registered, carriers fine the violation, and the fine travels down the chain to the CSP. A suspension also stops every number on the campaign, and the brand blames its CSP.

So a CSP needs two checks: one on each campaign before it goes upstream, and one on live traffic against what each campaign was approved for.

Moderation API’s 10DLC compliance add-on checks every message against the campaign it was sent under.
